Description
Torre Terzano is a medieval tower in the highest part of the old town of Campobasso, next to the Romanesque church of San Bartolomeo. It's the setting of the city's most famous love legend, a sort of Campobasso Romeo and Juliet.
Once called the "torrazzo" (the big tower), it takes its present name from the Terzano family, who bought it. It is a round tower in stone, with a few arrow slits: it was part of the 15th-century walls and guarded the last gate before the castle, which was demolished in the mid-19th century. The tower, on the other hand, has survived intact.
In the 16th century the city was split by the feud between the brotherhoods of the Crociati and the Trinitari. According to legend, the Trinitarian Delicata Civerra and the Crociato Fonzo Mastrangelo were in love, but their families forbade it: Delicata was locked in the tower and Fonzo went off as a soldier.
She died of grief on the very day the two factions made peace, in 1587; when he heard the news, he became a Franciscan friar.
