Description
The Palazzo della Banca d'Italia is the Campobasso branch of Italy's central bank, on Piazza Gabriele Pepe, in the city's 19th-century center. It opened in 1925, in the years when Campobasso was giving itself its great public buildings.
It is an elegant three-story building. Its most striking side is the slightly curved side facade: it seems to want to embrace the austere monument to Gabriele Pepe that stands in front of it.
Inside are paintings by artists from Molise, including Nicola Biondi, Arnaldo De Lisio and Francesco Paolo Diodati. They tell the key episodes in the history of Molise: among others, Ferrante I Gonzaga's entry into Campobasso, the city's redemption from feudal rule and the peace between the Crociati and the Trinitari.
Many houses were torn down to build it, including the one that housed the old toll office, the Vecchio Dazio.
