Description
The Fondaco della Farina is a small open space in the old town of Campobasso, a few steps from the church of San Leonardo, inside the ring of the old walls. The name ("flour warehouse") says it all: the city's bread passed through here before it even became bread.
Flour and grain ground at the surrounding mills came to the Fondaco: the goods were weighed and the toll was paid on them. Not far away, along Via Cannavina, you can still see the Mezzacanna, the official measure the customs officers used back then.
The square sits in the heart of the old town: after the earthquake of 1456, city life moved right around the little square of San Leonardo, whose church has a Gothic portal with the Lamb of God and cross in the lunette. The 18th-century Palazzo Cannavina also looks onto the alley.
